Trojan Hoops Squad Close Out Regular Season With Chance At Top-Two Seed

TGIF Troy Fam. Tomorrow, the calendar turns to the best month of the college basketball season.

But today, the Trojan hoops squads are looking to finish strong and close out the the regular season with a couple of Ws and earn an automatic berth into the semis in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournaments.

🔼 Closing Time. The time has come. The end of the regular season is upon us.

Both the men’s and women’s teams hit the court tonight with HUGE tournament seeding on the line in next week’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament action.

The women’s team has the showdown of the day as it hosts Arkansas State at 7 pm with a top-two seed at stake. ASU enters 14-3 in league play, while the Trojans sit at 13-4. A victory by Troy would give them the #2 seed and a berth into the semifinals of the SBC Tourney.

For the men, it’s a tad bit more complicated as four teams are battling for the top two seeds. Troy, who sits at 12-5 in league play, will travel to Southern Miss for a Friday night showdown. The Trojans sit tied with Arkansas State (at ULM) and South Alabama (vs. Louisiana), with all three teams a game back from JMU (at Texas State).

It appears March Madness is starting a day earlier this year for the Trojans.

🔼 Eight Is Great. Sometimes it’s the offense. Sometimes it’s the pitching. Sometimes, it’s a little of both.

Six different Troy pitchers scattered nine hits and struck out nine to secure a 7-4 victory over visiting UAB on Wednesday night to move the 20th-ranked Trojans to 8-1 on the year.

Lefty Jacob Roettgen opened the game with a pair of scoreless innings in his season debut before turning it over to Kelly Crumpton, who recorded his first career victory. Crumpton struck out one UAB hitter in the third.

Freshman southpaw Chase Cartron was sharp in two innings of work, racking up the first three strikeouts of his career and allowing one run. Sophomore Colton Walls made his season debut with two scoreless innings and one hit, while Colby Frieda pitched a scoreless eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts to set up Chase Nelson, who closed out the victory.

🔼 The Big 2-5-0. In order to earn a shot at a top-two seed, the Troy women’s hoops squad had to take care of business on Wednesday night.

That’s exactly what they did, dominating Texas State for all 40 minutes en route to an 86-66 victory, marking the 250th win of Coach Rigby’s career at Troy.

Five players scored in double-figures for Troy, led by Emani Jenkins with 15 points off a 6-of-9 shooting performance, including three triples. For her 22nd game with 10-plus points, Zay Dyer followed Jenkins with 14 while being one rebound short of her 15th double-double.

Brianna Jackson and Shaulana Wagner had 12 points apiece as the senior guard ended with nine rebounds and a team-high five assists – Briana Peguero was the final Trojan with double-digits (11 pts).

Today’s Trojan Top Performance, brought to you by Conecuh Sausage, is junior guard Emani Jenkins of the Troy women’s hoops squad. Jenkins came off the bench and gave a huge boost to the Trojans, finishing with a team-high 15 points, on 6-of-9 shooting, including three 3-pointers on the night. It was her eighth time reaching double-figures in scoring this season.
